With developmental editing, the editor may indicate and explain problem areas for the author to re-write or alter, suggest ideas for improvement or re-write portions herself.

Critique is a broad overall assessment of the manuscript. The editor thoroughly reviews the text and identifies strengths and weaknesses, specific problem areas and offers general solutions for improvement. The editor does not usually offer line-by-line advice in a critique.
